Working away on writing projects, and at some point yesterday afternoon as I rushed home from the grocery store, I got frustrated and overwhelmed.
How can I get this story done when I have to get groceries, I thought. Seriously, I need an assistant.
Reality rained on my parade, washing away any thought of rainbows when I realized my conundrum—to afford an assistant I need to get rich and famous, to get rich and famous I think I may need an assistant. Dejected, I stomped to my car with my bags of chops.
Last week was crazy. Our car broke down and needed a new starter, my phone was broken in a bizarre accident, our oven blew something and stopped working, I broke my first plate at work and only wrote 2,000 words on my current work in progress. I wanted to be done with the story and get on to the next thing on my list. I have deadlines stacking up.
Then I realized how whiny and pathetic I sounded. When were any of us promised an easy ride? Nothing worth having ever comes easy. Time to get back to it.
Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance, said Samuel Johnson, an English writer who made lasting contributions to the English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. He would know.
Perseverance seems doable. It’s simply continuing on, one foot, one step, one word at a time. I can do that. I’m also already 2,401 words into it with a whole fresh day tomorrow, so I have a headstart.
One word, one paragraph, one publication at a time… and we can each build libraries. Just persevere.
And all of a sudden , without noticing, you’ll be there.

ps. When you’re rich and famous and able to get an assistant, can I apply? You can fulfill your staff disability quota using me and I’ll try not to break things.
David, you would be hired. As soon as I’m rich and famous, you’re in. Don’t hold your breath though… I think there’s still a good portion of road ahead!
