Here’s some more info on my book Todd. I have always wanted to write, even in my childhood I made up stories that I sometimes wrote, but mostly I just kept them in my head. After I got married, my husband encouraged me. He bought me all sorts of writing instruments–sets of pens, pencils, notebooks–lol. He was so sweet about it. Only problem was I would get the beginning of an idea, write a few pages and it would fall flat.
Then I started thinking of listening to my father and his brothers and sisters talk of one of their childhood neighbors. He was an alcoholic who threatened to drop his children in a well when he got drunk. Sometimes his wife would come get my Grandfather to help talk him out of it. This was during the 30′s and 40′s and child protective services didn’t exist. These talks both frightened and intrigued me. I’d seen how deep those old water wells could be and they took my breath away. I tried to imagine what it would feel like to be held upside down over one and chills ran through me.
So I began to toy with the idea of somehow writing a story around that theme. I was still flip flopping back and forth in my mind until one night I woke up and very clearly I could see in my mind a little boy about ten years old walking down a dirt path similar to the one on my Granddaddy’s farm. Way off in the background, looking small and insignificant was the well. I knew this this child’s name was Todd, knew he had an older sister Libby and a younger sister Lilly Jean. I knew his parents were James and Vicky and that he had an Uncle Clyde.
From that point, the story of Todd began. It grew into a series (The Cedar Cove Chronicles). Five books in that series have been published and I’m working on the sixth and final book, Lilly Jean.
