How NOT to be a Starving Artist

An estimated $200 worth of like new clothing for less than $10.

I’ve gotten into the habit of making a trip to a local thrift store once a week just to see if there is anything amazing, and today’s trip was so successful I wanted to share.

Altogether I spent $30. I took home one pair of dress slacks, a vintage meat grinder, four plates, a glass, a soup thermos from Japan and *drumroll* a Vera Wang tunic, a cute summer dress and a pair of like new Børn wedges that fit like they were made for me. The shoes alone retail for $119.

Forget the stock market – the best returns come in the thrift shops.  I don’t always get such stellar finds but they are common enough to make the weekly trip to poke around worthwhile.

I recommend being choosy when thrift shopping.  It’s easy to get caught up in a buying frenzy just because things are so cheap.  I weigh each thing in my cart carefully before I check out and often put away half of what I’ve initially chosen. Tonight I walked out leaving behind a sweater, a cute plaid book satchel and brand new iPod nano cases. Thrift shops generally have so much incoming material, you can afford to wait for the truly stellar deals.

How have your thrift shop experiences been?
